Outreach Templates for French Media and Journalists
Proven outreach templates for French media and journalists: pitch structure, follow-ups, and real examples adapted for Le Monde, Les Echos, and regional press.
Templates are dangerous when they make you sound like everyone else. French journalists delete template emails for sport. But structure is not the enemy—laziness is. What we share here are frameworks our team adapts for every pitch: openings that earn attention, bodies that respect time, and follow-ups that do not burn bridges.
Use these as starting points. Personalise every line that matters. Reference real articles. Offer real value. And when in doubt, write shorter.
Principles Before Copy-Paste
Write to one person. “Bonjour Madame Dupont” beats “Dear Editor.”
Lead with the story, not the brand. French media serves readers, not your SEO dashboard.
Be bilingual strategically. Pitch in French unless you know the journalist works in English. Some tech and business reporters at Les Echos or The Local France do; most national desks do not.
One ask per email. Interview, data, comment—not all three in a novella.
Never mention backlinks in the first contact. If you do, you will not get a second.
Template 1: News Hook / Exclusive Data
Subject: Données exclusives — [topic] en France ([region or sector])
Body:
Bien cordialement,
[Nom] — [téléphone] — [email]
When to use: Tier 1 and Tier 2 media, especially économie and société desks. Works well with Ouest-France and Les Echos when data has regional breakdowns.
Template 2: Expert Commentary (Reactive)
Subject: Dispo pour commentaire — [événement d’actualité]
Body:
Cordialement,
[Nom, titre, lien LinkedIn crédible]
When to use: Same-day news. Monitor Google Alerts for French keywords and official @gouvernementFR announcements. Speed wins; perfection does not.
Template 3: Feature / Profile Pitch (Human Interest)
Subject: Portrait — [angle humain lié à votre secteur]
Body:
[Nom]
When to use: Regional press, Madame Figaro, podcasts, and slower-burn features. French culture values narrative—parcours, territoire, artisanat.
Template 4: B2B Trade Publication (English OK Sometimes)
Subject: Proposed op-ed: [specific French regulatory/business topic]
Body:
Hi [Name],
I read your piece on [article title] in [publication]. I’d like to propose a contributed 800-word op-ed on [narrow topic], drawing on [experience/data] from the French market—no product focus.
Outline:
- [Section 1]
- [Section 2]
- [Section 3]
Happy to write in French or English per your house style. Timeline: draft within 5 business days of approval.
Best,
[Name, role]
When to use: L’Informé, tech newsletters, international business outlets covering France.
Template 5: Follow-Up (Once)
Subject: Re: [original subject]
Body:
[Nom]
When to use: Five to seven business days after silence. One follow-up only unless they replied with “contact me next month.”
Template 6: Thank You and Relationship Maintenance
Subject: Merci pour l’article
Body:
Cordialement,
[Nom]
When to use: After positive coverage. Seeds future pitches. French journalists remember courtesy.
Adapting Tone by Outlet Type
| Outlet | Tone | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Le Monde / Libération | Formal, intellectual, no sales | 80–120 words |
| Les Echos / Challenges | Businesslike, data-forward | 100–150 words |
| Regional dailies | Local anchor required | 100–130 words |
| Digital native (Brut, etc.) | Visual/video angle, younger register | Short + asset offer |
| Trade press | Technical credibility upfront | Outline welcome |
What to Attach (and What Not To)
Do attach or link: one-page data summary, high-res charts, spokesperson bio in French, link to a French press page on your site.
Do not attach: 40-slide decks, US press releases, stock photos from 2012, or PDFs that cannot be copied.
French newsrooms work fast. Make their job easier.
Measuring Outreach Without Obsessing Over Links
Track:
- Open and reply rates (where measurable)
- Meetings and interviews secured
- Articles published citing your brand or data
- Referring domains from target publications (lagging indicator)
A month of thoughtful outreach might yield two conversations and one placement. That is normal for Tier 1. Volume without personalisation is how agencies inflate activity reports and deflate client trust.
Final Word From the Desk
The best “template” is evidence that you read the publication. When a client asks us to blast 200 French journalists, we push back. When they ask us to earn one Les Echos mention with exclusive French employment data, we get to work.
Copy the structures above. Replace every bracket with something true. Sound like a Paris agency director who respects the press—because that is who French editors take seriously.
